The days are long gone when people thought therapy was “for crazy people.”

Today, people seek therapy for concerns, relational difficulties, lack of confidence, and all kinds of issues that are not pathological but simply human.

Going to therapy is a way to examine and understand how and why we are in this world. It's a way to discover oneself and shed light on those “darker” parts we all have. Dark in the sense of unlit; it's not about demonizing what we feel, think, or are. It's about learning to accept ourselves.

We know that the society we live in pushes us to live fast-paced lives, detached from our needs and self-worth. Distracted, we search for happiness but don't know where to start. Or we know but don't dare.

In this context, it becomes essential to stop and look. To look at what's happening inside us. To look at what's happening around us.

  • Without looking, we cannot see (what's there).
  • Without seeing, we cannot know (who we are).
  • Without knowing, we cannot act (with coherence).
  • Without acting, we cannot live (fully).

This is what you gain from going to therapy: a fuller life.

Going to therapy is an act of love for your Self. It's a way of saying to yourself: my life matters, quality matters, my relationships matter, my loved ones matter.

Going to therapy goes beyond oneself, and at the same time, it starts with oneself. Because the first thing is to find out how you see the world and how you see yourself. From there, you can decide what to do with what you've discovered.

Is it true that not all sofas are equally comfortable?

There are sofas where you could stay for hours and others where you can last only a few minutes.

The same goes for therapists and therapeutic approaches.

Before choosing your therapist, you can look at their website (like you're doing right now) or social media, and if you like what you read, if their approach, communication style, or background interests you, that's a good sign.

There's also word of mouth. In this case, you'll already have a firsthand testimony about the therapist's work.

But no matter how you reach your therapist, the decisive test is the first session.

Specifically, the key is how you feel during the session, how the therapist responds to your needs and questions. Voice them and see how the “therapist candidate” responds.

Are they received? Validated? Given space?

These are good signs.

Do they downplay them? Deflect? Minimize? Take up space instead of giving it to you?

Bad, very bad.

If you're starting a process where you'll share what's happening inside, it's essential that you feel comfortable, like on a good sofa.

In short, choosing a therapist is a bit like choosing a sofa; you have to try it, and you have to feel a certain level of comfort.
